چکیده

[1] We collected 1850 km of ground-based radio echosounding (RES) data in West Antarctica along the 2001 US leg of the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition traverse (US-ITASE). These data represent the first high-resolution measurements of ice thickness and internal stratigraphy for portions of this area that bear on questions about the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS). Internal layers depicting isochrones have been traced continuously for much of the profile length and a date from the Byrd Deep Core is ascribed to one of these isochrones from which we estimate vertical velocities across the traverse route. Comparison of our ice thickness measurements with BEDMAP show good agreement in regions where the database is well constrained by data coverage. Where the BEDMAP dataset was forced to interpolate, differences are as high as 45% of the ice thickness.

Genesis and Deformation of Firn Stratigraphy in West and East Antarctica: Evidence from the Us Itase Subsurface Radar Profiles

The US contribution to the ITASE program obtained shallow and deep radar profiles along its thousands of km of traverse during 1999–2003 over West Antarctica, and along its 1200 km traverse behind the Transantarctic Mountains in East Antarctica during 2006–2007. I discuss the shallow profiles, which used short-pulse radar operating at 400 MHz to profile depths of 56–135 m in West Antarctica, an...

First results from radar profiles collected along the US-ITASE traverse from Taylor Dome to South Pole (2006–2008)

The 2006/07 and 2007/08 US-ITASE traverses from Taylor Dome to South Pole in East Antarctica provided opportunities to survey the subglacial and englacial environments using 3MHz and 200MHz radar. We present first results of these new ground-based radar data. A prominent basal deformation layer indicates different ice-flow regimes for the northern and southern halves of the Byrd Glacier drainag...

Bedrock topography and wind erosion sites in East Antarctica: observations from the 2002 US-ITASE traverse

Ice stratigraphy from deep-penetrating radar data collected during the 2002 US International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (US-ITASE) traverse shows evidence of a significant erosion surface and drift-filled basin related to a previously undiscovered 1400m subglacial mountain between Hercules Dome (878420 S, 1088W) and South Pole. The 3MHz radar profile crosses three subglacial mountain...

A time marker at 17.5 kyr BP detected throughout West Antarctica

Deep radar soundings as part of the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (US-ITASE) traverses in West Antarctica have revealed a bright internal reflector that we have imaged throughout widespread locations across the ice sheet. The layer is seen in traverses emanating from Byrd Station in four directions and has been traced continuously for distances of 535 km toward the Weddell...
